Dropping Trou
Season 9, Episode 1
Premiered: Sept. 13, 2004
Grade: C+
Summary: Eric and Annie once again find themselves dealing with their kids problems. Ruthie starts high school and gets detention after pulling Martin's pants down in front of his friends and the entire school, Simon's having sex with a girl they didn't know existed, Matt's home, Lucy's pregnant, and the twins are starting school. Camden mayhem.
Review: I was somewhat disappointed in the season premiere. I should always be prepared for disappointment in 7th Heaven, though. However, the episode had some good qualities, and thus it becomes an average episode, with a few morality and character twists.
After watching this episode, I have to say, I was going to give it a B. I enjoyed it. It was a good blend of drama, comedy, and normal Camden madness. However, after pondering on it for awhile, I noticed that none of the characters, except for Eric, were the way they were last season. Everybody had changed.
Martin was nice last season. This season, he was completely rude to Ruthie for no reason. Ruthie, on the other hand, acted like she was 30 last year, and in this episode she acted like she was 10. It's good she acted like a kid, but maybe just a smidge more mature. Simon was basically the same. He's been in the "it's my life, leave me alone" stage for awhile, but completely going against what Eric asked? I've seen him rebel, but nothing like that.
Annie has needed some rewriting since the menopause crisis of season 6. She's always jealous of Eric, always selfish, assumes easily. She's not the Annie that we saw in seasons 1 through 4. If I was Eric, there'd have been divorce papers three years ago. Also, why did Annie have any reason to suspect that Simon was having sex with Georgia? Honestly. She came home and heard them leaving. Just because she didn't know they were there doesn't mean they were having sex. They were a lot less scruffy than Lucy was after just making out with Robbie's brother in the episode "Who Do You Trust?" back in season 4. They didn't accuse her of having sex.
And what about Matt? Wasn't he always the overprotective big brother who cared about what each and every one of his siblings did, even if it was nothing to be worried about? What about in season 3 when he picked up Mary and Lucy because he thought they might have sex? Now Simon is actually having sex and he's telling Annie and Eric to leave him alone? What happened to him up in New York? Did he hit his head and forget who he was?
Lucy was still acting like a whiny teenager, except with a bigger stomach. I think the big pants storyline got a little old fast, though.
Ruthie should have been in the episode more. Everything's always about Lucy and Simon. Ruthie's older now and should have bigger, better plot lines. She hasn't had an episode revolving around her since "The Known Soldier", and that's been a few years ago.
Anyway, you've heard enough of me bickering about the episode. It was pretty good, despite everything I've mentioned. Some of the lines cracked me up, such as the Camden's all having "brain problems", Eric and Annie going out to dinner with Simon and Georgia, and Ruthie regretting Martin not having a sense of humor. It was acted decent, aside from Catherine Hicks and George Stults. Happy was actually there for two seconds. I just hope that the episodes following are at least this good or better.
Opinions?
